Improves water quality
Oxygenating plant
A strong taxiphyllum species.
You will receive 5g of this moss.
‘Spiky’ is Asiatic and grows 2-10 cm tall. Best described as Christmas moss' big brother, it is bigger and forms many deep green, branched shoots.
Spiky moss does best on vertical surfaces where the branched shoots will show. A beautiful carpeting effect is possible if you plant small tufts into the bottom substrate with a small interspace.
It grows fast and thrives at a very low light intensity.
In addition to enhancing the aesthetics of a freshwater aquarium, aquatic mosses provide a number of other benefits. For example, aquatic mosses contribute to improved water quality by absorbing nitrates and other nutrients from the water column. While most aquatic plants require high levels of light and fertilizer to facilitate this process, aquatic mosses do not. Like all live plants, aquatic mosses produce oxygen as a byproduct of photosynthesis which can help maintain ideal oxygen levels in your tank water. It is important to note that while aquatic mosses can improve the water quality in your tank, they should not be used as a substitute for regular water changes.
Another popular use for aquatic mosses is in breeding tanks. Soft aquatic mosses are ideal as a spawning medium, particularly for egg-scattering fish. Newly born fry from livebearing species of fish also like to hide in aquatic mosses. Cultivating aquatic mosses in a breeding tank can also provide food for newly hatched fry because microscopic organisms tend to thrive around moss.
